Apolonio was a Papago (Tohono O'odham) man

"Papago” is the Spanish word for “tepary-bean eaters, but growing tired of being labeled this way, they changed their name to Tohono O'odham which means Desert People, relating to their primary existence in the Sonoran Desert. Their homeland included the area that is now Southern Arizona and the northern portion of the state of Sonora, Mexico.

Biography:
Born c. 1865 (calculated backwards from the date of death and known age of 54) to unknown parents, Apolonio was committed to the Canton Asylum on June 3, 1916, from the San Xavier Agency, Arizona, and was 52 years old at that time, according to the 1917 Asylum for Insane Indians School census.

According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Apolonio was not provided a diagnosis at his admission, and later records do not show a diagnosis.

From Dr. L.L. Culp's letter dated February 17, 1934, to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Apolonio died at the Canton Asylum on January 4, 1919, and was buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery, tier 1 plot 84.

His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.

Research Notes:
-the 1919 Jun 30 Canton Asylum census has not been found but dying on January 4, 1919, Apolonio Miranda would not have been included anyway. Apolonio Miranda was NOT in the 1920 census.
-The Dr. L.L. Culp letter dated February 17, 1934, suggests that Apolonio was committed by the Sells Agency, while the Canton Superintendent narrative from 1917 suggests that Apolonio was committed by the San Xavier Agency.
-A review of the San Xavier Agency Papago, living on the reservation, 1911-1917 censuses, identify no one named Apolonio Miranda or Miranda Apolonio (There are several persons named Antonio but NO Miranda surname is found.)
-The name Apolonio Miranda is NOT found in the censuses of the San Xavier Papago by the Pima Agency from 1899 or 1901.
-In the Pima Arizona voting registers for 1882 there is an Apolonio Morada age 27 = b. c. 1855
-There do not appear to be records for Apolonio Miranda until after his admission to the Canton Asylum, numerous searches using numerous parameters all turn up empty.
