About Archibald Hamilton Duthie
Lieutenant Archibald Hamilton Duthie, 2nd West India Regiment, British Army: The son of the up at Knysna in the Cape, South Africa, he was gazetted an Ensign in the 2nd West India Regiment in September 1861. the West India Regiment was unsusual in that it formed an integral part of the British Army. Duthie served with the regiment in West Africa in 1863, against the much-feared Ashanti in the vicinity of the River Prah (which served, in name only, as a line of demarcation between the British and the Ashanti), and at one stage commanded McCarthy’s Island, 321 Kilometres up the Gambia River. The extremely debilitating climate accounted for most of the regiment’s losses, including Duthie himself, and he was invalided to England in 1864. He later rejoined his regiment at headquarters in St. Ann’s, Barbados, but with his health greatly impaired from his service in West Africa, he was medically boarded and retired from the British Army in 1866, returning to South Africa.
