About Archibald James Kay
Archibald James Kay was the eldest son of George and Catherine McLeod Mc Queen (née Fraser) Kay. Born on 17 April 1886 at Timaru, he was educated at Mackenzie School, Canterbury. Archibald enlisted with the 8th Light Horse, 10th Reinforcements of the Australian Imperial Force on 28 June 1915 at Melbourne, aged 28 years 7 months. He had served one year with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. A quarryman, Presbyterian, and then single, he named his father as next-of-kin – Mr George Kay, “Homeview”, Cheviot, Canterbury, N.Z. In 1915 in Victoria, before embarkation, Archibald married Florence Thompson, their first child being born after his return from the war. He died in 1960 at Oakleigh, Victoria, Australia, aged 73 years. Two brothers – Benjamin James Kay and George Cheviot Kay – were killed in action in 1915 at Gallipoli.
