Archibald Morton White

Whilst cleaning a revolver at his residence, Bolivia Station, yesterday, Mr Archibald (Archie) Morton White accidentally shot himself. The bullet entered the abdomen. Medical aid from Tenterfield and Glen Innes was quickly summoned, but there was no hope from the first. Mr White died the same evening. He leaves a widow and two children. Widespread regret is expressed, as he was the foremost public man of the district.

Mr. White had been president of Tenterfield Shire Council since its formation, ex-president of Tenterfield Agricultural Society and one of the vice-presidents of the local jockey club and picnic race club, and captain of the Sandy Flat Rifle Club.

Son of the late Edward White, of Martindale, near Donman, one of his brothers, Major J. F. White, of Shannon Vale Station, is on active service, another, E. Reginald White, of Merton, has booked his passage to England by the Osterley, The remaining brother, Mr Harold White, lives at Martindale.

The late Mr White was the most deservedly popular man in the Tenterfield district. Since taking up his residence on Bolivia Station, 20 miles from Tenterfield, he took an active interest in the district's welfare, and brought it to the fore for producing the best beef cattle in the State. He introduced the best strains of Shorthorns, and freely sold progeny to small holders. The deceased had the honour of holding the record price for fat stock at Homebush—obtained only a month ago.

The breeding of good horses, principally blood and galloway stock, was a business hobby of Mr White's. Winners on the turf on many occasions carried his colours, his most notable win being with Midge B., when the latter won the Brisbane St Leger.

When polo was a favourite sport in the district, Mr White was an enthusiast and also took part in the various polo carnivals in Sydney.

Deceased's wife is a daughter of the late Hon C. B. Dutton of Brisbane and latterly of Cooredulla, Tenterfield. One of his sisters is married to Major White.
