About Edward White, of Martindale

Mr. Edward White, a well-known pioneer pastoralist of New South Wales, died at his late residence, Kigwigil, Kirribilli Point, North Sydney, last month, at the age of seventy-three years. Mr. White, who recently made Martindale, on the Hunter River, over to his sons, was born at Edinglassie, near Muswellbrook, in 1839. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. James White, who came to Australia in the early twenties to manage one of the A. A. Company's properties, and who subsequently purchased Edinglassie and other properties. Educated at the old St. James' Grammar School in Sydney, Mr. Edward White entered the pastoral world early in life, the first property he took up on his own account being Merton, on the Hunter River, purchased from Captain Ogilvie in 1864, and in 1875 he bought Martindale from his brother James. In 1880 he purchased Bolivia Station, in the Tenterfield district, from the late Mr. Edward Irby, the pioneer of that part of the country, and in the nineties Glen Elgin, Shannon Vale, and Newton Boyd, in the Glen Innes district. Mr. White also purchased Ballandean, a big run in the Stanthorpe district of Queensland. In 1908 he decided to retire from active pastoral life, and his four sons took over his properties under the name of Martindale White Bros., with Mr. E. R. White as managing director.

The late Mr. Edward White was president of the Upper Hunter Agricultural Society for many years, and was also associated with the Pastures Protection Board and local Land Board. His residence in Sydney was a beautiful spot on Kirribilli Point, overlooking the harbour. He married a daughter of the late Mr. Archibald Bell, and leaves four sons and three daughters. His wife also survives him.
