About Arden Nephi Bunderson

In the 1920 U.S. Census, enumerated on January 16, baby Arden is living in St. Charles, Bear Lake County, Idaho, with his parents, Nephi, 42 years old, his mother, Annie M. 38 years old, and his older siblings, Lester F., 15, Vidella D., 13, Hazel E., 11, Eva L. 9, Lee E. 6, and Arden is just 2 months old. On September 30, 1921, Annie gave birth to her seventh child, Mark, but she never recovered from the birth, and a month later, on October 27, 1921, Annie passed away, leaving her husband Nephi and seven children, including the newborn. Those were difficult days, especially the four days until her burial, while her body was kept in the home and placed on ice to preserve it.

To help care for the family, Annie's sister, Emma Dills took baby Mark to her home in Pocatello to care for him. The responsibilities of cooking, cleaning and caring for the other children, including Arden who was only two years old at the time, fell upon his older sister, Vidella, and she was not able to return to school for about a year. When Vidella was eighteen, her father married Iola Keetch, on June 24, 1924. At that time, Mark was brought back to live in St. Charles, but he missed his Aunt Emma, the only mother he had known. Vidella told of a memory with Mark the following spring, "I remember coming home from a date with Lovell. Mark woke up and said, 'Oh, Mydell, Mydella' and crawled into bed with me. The next day, on March 1, 1925, Mark passed away from pneumonia at the age of three and one half.

Vidella's beau, and future husband, Lovell Booth was the 23rd of 24 children of Mosiah Works Booth. Mosiah was born in Missouri on June 15, 1838, and traveled to Utah in the Miller/Cooley wagon company in 1853, where he was known as "the orphan". He was only 15 when he joined the Mormon movement west, following the death of his father, Lorenzo Dow Booth, though his mother remained in Illinois. Mosiah first settled in Grantsville, Utah, then joined a group moving north to settle the Bear Lake Valley in the spring of 1864. He came with the second group of families which included Leonard Floyd, Sjunne Bunderson and their families. Mosiah married Mary Adaline Allred in 1859, then joined the practice of plural marriage twenty two years later when he married Lovell's mother, Ambrozine Hibbert in 1881. Ambrozine had emmigrated from England with a young daughter, but her previous marriage was never discussed. She and Mosiah had eleven children, and Lovell was next to the youngest.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, Arden is still living in St. Charles, Bear Lake, Idaho, with his father, Nephi, 52, and step-mother, Iola, 34, and siblings: Lester F., 25, Eva L., 20, Lee E., 17, Afton K. 4 months old, and a newborn baby, Maralyn K. In this census, Arden's father is listed as a Cattleman on a Ranch, and his brother, Lester, is a Brakeman on a Steam Railroad. His brother Lee is a farm laborer. Arden's father, Nephi, indicates both his parents were born in Sweeden.

1940 U.S. Census, Arden was still living in St. Charles, Bear Lake, Idaho. At that time, he was 20 years old and living with his father, Nephi, and step-mother, Iola K. Bunderson, age 62 and 44, and his half siblings, Alton K., 15, Merilyn, 10, Whitney K., 8, and Lyman K., 4. There are other Bunderson families on the same census page, including James, 54, and his wife Verba R., 53, and their 29 year old daughter Wilma. Next door is Grant and his wife, Iona, and they are 29 and 23. Next door to them is Augusta Bunderson (who was from Sweden) and her 3 daughters, June, Keela, Velma, and Elaine, ages 22, 19, 16, and 10.

Next door to all the Bunderson's, there was a Johnathan J. Pugmire, and his wife, Lillian A., ages 57 and 47, and their children, C. Reed, 20, Verna, 18, Jack C. 13, E. Farris, 11, Karma, 6, and Kay, 6. They may have also been distant relatives.

According to the census record, Arden had attended 4 years of high school and was working as a farmer, as was his father.

The Western States Marriage Index, 1809-2011, indicates that Arden married Thelma Bateman in 1944 in David, Utah. Arden was 24 years old, living in St. Charles, Idaho, and Thelma was 21, living in Bloomington, Idaho. They were married in Salt Lake City, 8/25/1944, in the LDS temple there. They had a son Roy, March 22, 1946, and another son, Max Otis, May 29, 1949. Thelma must have died in childbirth in 1953, since she and her daughter Colleen, born April 12, 1953, and died April 13, 1953, are buried together according to their gravestone. And Thelma's death date is April 12th, so she died first and her baby girl died the next day.

Arden later married Verdena, and they had five children, Catherine Ann in 1959, Jon, who was born and died in 1962, Joy in 1964, Rex in 1967 and Gay in 1968.
