NEW ROCKFORD -- Edgar Marshall "Arne" Arntson, 89, New Rockford, died June 12, 1999, in a Carrington health center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, New Rockford, with full military honors provided by Raymond B. Thorn American Legion Post No. 30, New Rockford.

Arne was born Feb. 15, 1910, in Lisbon to I.E. and Karen (Walla) Arntson. He grew up in Lisbon and graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, he worked for the State Highway Department and the Federal Works Administration prior to World War II.

He married Marjorie Day on Oct. 10, 1938 in New Rockford. The couple lived in LaMoure and Bismarck, before making their home in New Rockford. They have a daughter and a son. Arne served four years in World War II as an engineer in both the European and African theaters, attaining the rank of major. He participated in the invasion of Italy and was assigned the responsibility of the supply and distribution of electric power for the city of Naples.

After the war, he worked as a resident engineer for rural electric cooperatives on the staff of Ulteig Engineers in Fargo. In May, 1948, he became General Manager of Tri-County Electric Cooperative in Carrington. He retired in 1976.

Arne was a past president of the North Dakota Rural Electric Managers Association, the Central Power Management Advisory Committee, the North Dakota Power Use Council, the Carrington Kiwanis Club, and the St. James School Board in New Rockford. He was a member of the school board, of the Fargo Diocese and was chairman of the Medical Staff Committee of City Hospital, New Rockford. He was a member of the Governing Board of the City Hospital and Parish Council of the St. John's Catholic Church in New Rockford and a member of the New Rockford Kiwanis Club, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arne was a registered Professional Engineer in North Dakota, and a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He was honored with the North Dakota Power Council Award in 1970 and also honored as North Dakota Manager of the Year in 1971.

Arne was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and a sister.

Arne is survived by Marge, his wife of 60 years; a son, John (Mary), Fargo; a daughter, Karen (William) McDonnell, Eau Claire, Wis.; one sister, Norma Arntson, Lisbon; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)
