About Aron Chaim Kohen Rapoport

Lived on Szpitalna Street with his son in Lwow ca 1810-20.

The Maskilim also gathered on Szpitalna Street at Salomon Jehudah Rappoport's house where he lived with his father, Rabbi Aron Chaim Rappoport who was a Chacham [scholar] and kept a Yeshivah for pupils from the towns of Galicia. After he married the daughter of the children's Torah teacher, Rabbi Arieh Leib[6] who was subsequently elected rabbi of Stryj and was known as the author of Kezot HaChoshen. His spiritual development was much inspired by his mother, Zirel Etel, who was a gentle woman known as “The Pearl of Women”, as well as by her brother Eliahu Barda. At home, Salomon Jehudah Rappoport, lectured to the Maskilim circle on research into Jewish history.

it may be that Chaim Kohen Rapoport/Rappaport is a relative: Rabbi Chaim HaKohen Rappaport, A.B.D. Lwow

[Comment: Jacobi is uncertain as to the Kohenite status of this lineage. On the title page of his son's book, Erin Millin, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rappaport_Erekh_Milin.JPG, the name is written as Shlomo Yehuda Leyb Kahan Rapaport. However, his son was the spouse of Freda bat Aryeh Leyb Kahana, and it is possible that her spouse adopted the Kahana name from her side of the family. The Jewish Encyclopedia article does not refer to him as a Kahan:https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/12576-rapoport#294. This question could possibly be answered if the gravestone of his son Solomon Judah Löb Rapoport (Shir) d1867 can be located in Prague. Whether this line of Rapaports descends from the Rapaport HaCohen line could also be explored genetically with the assistance of Alexander Rappaport who is descendant from this line. (05 FEB 2023)]

From Chapter 10: list of Lwow rabbis: ......

1750: The Rabbi, Reb. Izak Landa, leader of the religious law–court and teacher of Jewish law [mor%C3%A9 zedek] for the Lwow region. He, together with Rabbi Ezechiel Landa ––leader of the religious law–court and teacher of Jewish law at the holy community of Jampol [Yampol] (Wolyn [Volhynia])–– were elected “collectors–of–dues, for the Judaic studies programmes of married men [Kollel] within the Four Lands of Poland, and for the learned Presidents of Eretz Israel”.

1755: Rabbi Chaim Kohen Rapoport.

1762:[27] Rabbi Chaim Kohen Rapoport.

1763: Rabbi Chaim Kohen Rapoport was the deputy of the presidency committee's elder.

1764–1765: In 1764, the three Land leaders of the Reissen region participated in the session of the Council of Four Lands. Their names are not known.

On 1st June 1764, during the Sejm's session at Warsaw, a proposal was put forward to liquidate the Jewish communities' autonomous institution (Council of Four Lands, and Regional Committees), and to collect the Jewish poll tax (four Gulden from every adult and one Gulden from a child) directly, and not via the Jewish institutions.

On 6th June 1764 it was decided by the Senate, by 16 votes to 13, and by the Sejm, by 66 votes to 36, to abolish all the committees; to organize a census of all the Jews in the country; to eliminate the collective poll tax which had been determined in the 1717 constitution, but to charge them instead a personal poll tax, of 2 Gulden annually.
