In Memoriam
ARTHUR JAMES BALLANTINE, M.B., Ch.B.(Edin.).
F.R.C.S.(Edin.)
Mr. J. A. Currie and Dr. A. W. S. Sichel - Cape Town write
The death of Dr. A. J. Ballantine at the age of 77, at East London. brings to an end a life of service to his profession and his country, ungrudging devotion to his patients, and undeviating obedience to the call of duty.
Ballantine, son of Major R. Ballantine. M.LA., was born in 1887 at Keis Kama Hoek. Educated at Dale College, he eventually took the B.A. (Honours) in 1907. His scholastic career was distinguished. He took various class prizes at school, and gained the medals in all subjects for the B.A. course, including the honours medals in chemistry and botany. He was awarded the Porter Scholarship on the results of the B.A. examination.
After a short spell of botanical research under Professor Pearson he went to Edinburgh where he qualified in medicine, with 2nd class honours, in 1912. In 1914 he obtained the Edinburgh F.R.C.S. Returning to Cape Town he held a lectureship in anatomy under Prof. R. B. Thompson, until war ended his academic activities.
He served first in East Africa with the 2nd S.A. Field Ambulance and 4th S.A. Horse under General van Deventer and was mentioned in dispatches. He was invalided out in 1916, but returned later and served in Nyasaland and Portuguese East Africa under General Northey.
After the war he joined Dr. Hector B. Morris in practice in Wynberg, Cape Town. His practice was large and his patients were devoted to him. He was closely associated with the Victoria Hospital, Wynberg, and was for several years its Honorary Medical Superintendent.
World War II saw him on service again. He was S.M.O. at Potchefstroom, then O.C. of Cullinan Hospital, and finally O.C. of the combined Cullinan and Sonderwater Hospitals. In 1943 he was transferred to North Africa as O.C. of No. 106 S.A. General Hospital and served in Tripoli, in the Delta and in Italy.
He returned to practice for a short period after World War II and in 1948 was President of the Cape Western Branch of the Association. He was also a keen member of the now defunct Southern Peninsula Medical Society.
In 1952 he retired and later went to live in East London, Eastern Cape, where he remained until his death.
Ballantine was a _shy man essentially. This shyness led to a taciturn nature which could conceal neither his kindness and friendliness nor his wide knowledge and erudition. His professional interests, in spite of his surgical qualifications, were, on the whole, confined to general medicine obstetrics and the ordinary duties of general practice. His' diagnostic skill was of a very high order and his reading extensive. In _later years of practice he had a strong leaning to the subject of allergy, in which field he did some excellent clinical work.
Apart from professional duties, his interests were many and varied. He was an active Rotarian. and had been President of the Rotary Club in Wynberg.
His early botanical interests never completely left him. He had a large collection of orchids and helped to found the Orchid Society of South Africa. He left his collection of orchids to the Botanical Gardens in East London.
Wild life, archeology and history (especially the history of the Frontier Wars) and the collection of Africana all aroused his interest and enthusiasm. He read widely, but seldom paraded his knowledge. An intimate talk with him was always interesting and revealing. He proved a fine type of general practitioner mainly because he realized his own short comings and never allowed himself to get out of his depth in the technicalities of medical practice.
Towards the_ close of his_ life the company of his grand children was his greatest delight. Dr. Ballantine married three times and had two chidren. Dr. R. F. Ballantine of Lady Grey and Mrs. C. K. Hill of Durban.
Our sympathy goes out to bis family in their great loss.
