About Arthur Lehman

Collector, philanthropist, founder of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, investment banker, Lehman Brother's (firm), and brother of Governor Herbert H Lehman.

Lehman and his wife, the former Adele Lewisohn, collected art of the 14th to 20th centuries. One rare example of Gothic tapestry in the Lehman collection is a golden tapestry of the fifteenth century, representing "The Holy Family," which was purchased from P W French and Company in 1916, for approximately $100,000 (New York Times, 3/2/1916).

Arthur Lehman was a member of the board of directors of the Merchants Association of New York, a member of the board of trustees the New School for Social Research, a trustee of the Museum of the City of New York and a member of the board of trustees of the City Housing Corporation and the Andrew Freedman Home.

Lehman was a member of the City, City Midday, the Broad Street, Harmonie, Lotus, Harvard, Recess, Whist and Century Clubs.

Arthur Lehman, Governor’s Brother, Dies Suddenly

May 18, 1936

NEW YORK (May. 17)

Funeral services were held at Temple Emanu-E1 this afternoon for Arthur Lehman, banker and a brother of Governor Herbert H. Lehman.

Mr. Lehman, who would have been 63 years old on June 1,died suddenly early yesterday morning at his home, 45 East Seventieth Street, of what his physician described as a pulmonary embolism brought on by a thrombosis of a leg vein.

Mr. Lehman, a senior member of the banking firm of Lehman Brothers, was long actively identified with charitable endeavors. He was president at one time of the Federation for the support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, which he helped found.

A director in many industrial and banking organizations, Mr. Lehman also was active in educational and communal affairs of New York City. He was a member of the board of directors of the Merchants Association, a trustee of the New School for Social Research, of the Museum of the City of New York, of the City Housing Corporation and the Andrew Freedman Home.

Mr.Lehman is survived by his widow, the former Adele L. Lewisohn; three daughters, Mrs. Richard Bernhard, Mrs.Benjamin Buttenweiser, and Mrs. John Loeb; a sister, Mrs. Philip Goodhart, and three brothers, Governor Lehman, Philip Lehman of Lehman Brothers, and Judge Irving Lehman of the Court of Appeals.
