About Arthur Raymond Liddle
Arthur and Mabel Liddle
(notes typed by Jack Gainford late in 2002)
Information from Jeanne Perry: Arthur was born in 1885; Mabel was born in 1886, in Norfolk, and her father was called Jethro. Arthur and Mabel married in 1909.
Jack’s knowledge, partly from his mother: Arthur was employed in the offices of Pease and Partner, and at some time before 1939 he and Mabel were able to move into a detached house, 59 Salutation Road, an up-market area on the western edge of Darlington, not far from the Hummersknott estate, where Arthur had been brought up. They also had a car, a Ford Anglia, before 1939, so I think he must have risen fairly high in the firm. In addition, they were thrifty, (but not in my experience mean), and they had no surviving children. (I think there may have been some miscarriages and/or stillbirths.) Arthur was short and dapper. Although I have heard things said against him, they may have been to some extent caused through the envy of siblings, magnified by gossip within the family. He always seemed to me a perfect gentleman.
Arthur died in 1969 and Mabel in 1974.
