About Arthur L Lindsay
I knew Arthur Leslie LINDSAY. He was my Great Uncle. Great Uncle Arthur Leslie LINDSAY 1886 was a trained "hairdresser" as told to me by my Mum, his niece. He was more likely called a Barber, in those days. Mum was born Elizabeth Elva LINDSAY, (called ELVA) second of four daughters to Arthur's younger brother and "baby" of that LINDSAY family, Alfred Bertie LINDSAY (called Bert) b. 1888. & his wife, Alice nee BALKS. Mum and her sisters knew Uncle Arthur far better than any of the others of their Father's siblings as he had visited them on more than a few occasions. Bert's and Arthur's Father, John LINDSAY b. Newcastle NSW1844 when widowed, came from Uralla, NSW where the family had eventually settled, to live for a while with Bert and Alice in their home in New Lambton NSW and Arthur would visit his Father whilst he lived with Bert. I can remember Uncle Arthur - not too clear with the earlier memories but I know he visited when I was young but the last time I saw him, I was by then a young Trainee Nurse at Royal newcastle Hospital. I was about 17 years old and can clearly recall his visit to my Mum's home (ELVA) in Hamilton South. It was probably, in his mind, a deliberate visit to the family for the last time. He would then be only in his 70's but was a double amputee, having lost both legs in his old age. He was being driven and cared for on this trip by John LINDSAY (called DAVE) b 1911, Uralla, son of Arthur's eldest brother, John Francis & his wife Ada STOKER. John, called Dave had not married. He carried on a small Carrying/delivery/ carting business in Uralla, commenced by his Father. Uncle Arthur was then residing in Melbourne where he had lived for some many years. My Dad, Roland EWING was in the RAAF during WW ll and whilst posted in and around Melbourne, would visit Uncle Arthur and his 2nd wife (Called Babs)I knew nothing of what is documented about Arthur's first wife but whilst researching found a first wife and child. I have no further knowledge of this earlier union or issue. Uncle Arthur died in Melbourne, sometime... I think, in the 1960's. Have to get back into my papers to become clearer of these "facts".
