Death location footnote: Worthington (MA) Vital Records

Asa Cottrell was probably born in Stonington in 1746. In his Revolutionary War pension file #S 29087, Asa makes a declaration to receive pension benefits enacted by Congress, June 7, 1832. The date of his testimony is 20 August 1832; he is 86 years old "born as he supposes in Stonington in Connecticut in the year 1746 but has no record of his age except his family record." In that document, he notes that he resided in Worthington during the Revolutionary War and continued to live there for the remainder of his life.

He married Lucinda Clapp on December 6, 1770 in Worthington. MA VR to 1850, Worthington, V1:82; "Lucindy, Mrs. [int. Lucenda, omits Mrs.], and Asa Cottrel [int. Cottril of Saulsbury], Dec. 6, 1770". Note: "Mrs" implies that she was married before she married Asa; another record refers to her as Lucinda Otis Clapp.

Revolutionary War service: In the month of June 1776, he enlisted at Worthington for six months in the Company commanded by Capt. Oliver Lyman of Northampton. His Company marched for Boston and joined the Regiment of Colonel Dykes and served out his term of duty stationed at Dorchester, MA.

In August 1777, he re-enlisted at Worthington in the Company commanded by Captain Webber in the Colonel Chapin's Regiment. The period of this volunteer enlistment was 2 months and 15 days.

In August 1778, he again enlisted at Worthington for four months into the Company commanded by Captain Daniel Pomeroy. The company marched to Albany and served guard duty for the city for the period of his enlistment.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: May 16 2024, 11:58:23 UTC
