Asa fought in the Civil War for the Union. At one point he was stricken with blindness from sun exposure, captured by Confederate soldeirs, and kept prisoner for a time. After the war he married Mary E knox in Limestone County, Texas. She was a former resident of Iroquois County.
Asa served for many years as constable of the county.
I (Elton Kenneth Thomas) remember Uncle Ase, or everyone called him, very well. He told me(I was just a boy then) about his experiences in the Civil War and other things in his life. he was a lean, ferocious looking man with white moustache and hair, and peircing eyes, and the kindest and gentlest of dispositions.
