About Ashe Windham

Ashe was educated at Eton College, and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge with an MA. He held the office of Resident Magistrate of Natal between 1857 and 1867. In 1888 his name was legally changed to Windham by Royal License.

Extract from "The Caledonian Mercury" dated 1 November 1859 At Bishopstowe, near Pieter Maritzburg, on the 19th August, by the Lord Bishop of Natal, Ashe Smijth Windham, Esq., Resident Magistrate of Umvoti, to Juliet Alexa, daughter of Hugh Maclean, Esq., of Coll, Argyllshire.

Extract from "The London Gazette" dated June 29, 1888 Whitehall, June 23, 1888 The Queen has been pleased to grant unto Ashe Smijth-Windham, of Wawne, in the county of York, Esquire, Her Royal license and authority that he and his issue may, in compliance with a clause contained in the last will and testament of William George Windham (formerly William George Smijth-Windham), late of Wawne aforesaid, Esquire, deceased, discontinue to use the surname of Smijth, and henceforth take, use, and bear the surname of Windham only: And to command that the Royal concession and declaration be recorded in Her Majesty's College of Arms.
