- Nikesh Ramdutt Ramoutar (23), and Jayaseelan Pillay (31), who were charged with the murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, were convicted and sentenced in the Durban High Court to life imprisonment.
- A third man, Brandon Peter Isaiah, pleaded guilty last week and was sentenced to 20 years for Birijlal's murder and 15 years for robbery.
- During the trial both Ramoutar and Pillay pleaded not guilty and pointed fingers at each other. After Birijlal was killed, his silver-grey Nissan Sentra had been taken. Ramoutar told the court Pillay had been driving the car when he met him that night, but Pillay said it was Ramoutar.
