About Atlee "Lee" B Nixon

Killed by Lightning. On last Tuesday at about eight o'clock Lee Nixon, son of Lon Nixon of Harrisburg township, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. He with Mr. Nixon had been out in the field with a manure spreader to which they had three horses hitched. As soon as the storm came up they started for and reached the east side of the big barn and were unhitching the horses when the bolt struck him. He was on the left side of the spreader putting up the lines on his horse when it happened. The middle horse, a thoroughbred mare, was instantly killed. The son walked several steps and then fell in a pool of water, face down. His father went to him and picked him up and carried him to the corn crib, before he discovered that he had expired. After this he was taken to the house by his parent, who then began to feel the effects of the shock, and went up stairs and to bed. Although severely shocked it is thought he will recover. The barn was set on fire by the stroke but was seen from the house by two of the other boys, who immediately went and put it out. Atlee B. Nixon, son of Alonzo and Alice A. Nixon, was born near Utica September 27, 1887, died May 25, 1915, aged 28 years, 7 months and 28 days. He is survived by father, mother, one sister and nine brothers. Three brothers John, Bert and Ferd and sister Nettie who are in distant states were unable to be present. The deceased was a member of M.W.A. Camp No. 6614 of Stockport, Iowa. Lee as he was familiarly called by his friends was an upright young man of good morals, clean habits and lovable disposition. His sudden death by lightning was a great shock to his many friends and to his parents who are both prostrated and under the care of a physician. Rev. C.S. Carroll, pastor of the Utica Baptist church conducted the funeral sermon yesterday morning and interment was had in Dibble cemetery. Stockport News.
