LightningBug was a Cherokee man

Biography

Lightning Bug Bowles was the son of Chief Duwali/John Bowles and his wife Oo-loo-tsa. He was born about 1784 in the Cherokee Nation. He had two wives and at least seven children. With his first wife, A-yu-su, he was the father of Joseph, Caroline, John, and Jefferson. [1] With his second wife, Ar-quo-sah, he was the father of Te-car-noo-sah (Whiskey), Kar-yar-hee, and De-car-be-car. [2]

Lightning Bug is assumed to have moved first to Arkansas and then on to Texas with his father and other family members. When the Texas Cherokee were forced off their lands in 1839 and Duwali was killed some members of his family were captured, some were killed, some went to Texas, and some went to Indian Territory. Lightning Bug and his family appear on the 1851 "Old Settler" roll living in the Canadian District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. [3]

in 1843 Lightning Bug was elected as a councilor from the Canadian District but he did not take office. Later in the 1850's he was elected as a Senator from the Canadian District serving until at least 1859. His date of death is unknown, but by 1896 he and all of his children had also died, leaving no descendants. [4]
