Attie Potgieter (1970 – 2010)

Brief overview:

Attie (40), a farm manager, and cattle farm owner, his wife Wilna Potgieter (36), and their daughter Wilmien Potgieter (3), were all murdered on the Potgieters 11th wedding anniversary, on 1st December 2010. It is believed that little Willemien, who was taken to an outside room, and shot in the back of the head, so she wouldn't be able to identify the killers. Her body was then carried back to where her mother was murdered in the main bedroom. Attie's body was found outside the house, next to a fence at the back door. It appears that he was taken by surprise and hit on the back of the head with a sharp object, possibly a panga, and also stabbed with a garden fork.

The murderers left a chilling message written in Sotho on a piece of cardboard which read - "We have killed them. We are coming back". It was found on the gate of the farm.

Three farm workers were arrested in townships in the area, three more suspects were arrested. According to early information, one of them is only 17 years old.
