About Augusta Schafer
Augusta lived most of her life in Desboro. She was the daughter of Jacob and his 2nd wife Mary. I did not meet this woman until she was well into her 80's. At that time , she lived on the main floor of her little house just north of Desboro,with no running water ( pump in kitchen), wood stove for heat, and a straw mattress for her bed. She spoke very little English ( German) and her greatest pleasure was when I redid her mattress (straw) for her. She had twice been in a home but pined for her little house and privacy and returned home. She died at the home of her great-nephew in Williamsford, still sleeping on her straw mattress brought from her little home.
