Bishop of Utrecht from 918 to 975

Balderich (* around 897 in Oldenzaal , † December 27, 975 [1] ) was Bishop of Utrecht from the Count family in Hainaut , son of Count Richfried, cousin of Duke Giselbert of Lorraine and Count Reginar II in Hainaut.

Balderich, born in the county of Twenthe , which belonged to his father's house, seems to have reached the Utrecht diocese early. In any case, due to his family connections and his personality, he assumed an excellent position early on among the greats of the empire. King Heinrich I handed over his 4-year-old son Brun to him for upbringing, and through this he was also in close relationship with Emperor Otto I So he was one of the Lorraine lords, the 953 in Otto's fight against his son Liudolfstood on the king's side, and his presence was mentioned on various days of the princes. He was also in Cologne in 965 when Otto met his mother for the first time after his imperial coronation.

After the devastation suffered by the Normans , he brought his diocese back to bloom through careful and vigorous administration, especially St. Martin's Church (Elsk) . The Cathedral school there flourished under him. When he died he bequeathed Oldenzaal to part of the Twenthe county to his pen. He was revered as a saint for a long time.
