Mrs. Barbara Anne Jones Akins, age 80, died Tuesday morning at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro following a brief illness.

Barbara was born in Tampa, Florida moving to Statesboro at the age of 6. Her grandfather was the pastor of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where Barbara was a soloist in the choir for years. During grade school she enjoyed playing the the band, taking voice, speech and drama in her elementary and high school years. She attended Wesleyan Conservatory School in Macon, Georgia for two years, where she received her first formal art instruction and studied under Emil Holzhauer. She considered him one of her greatest inspirations. She then married and transferred to Georgia Southern College for her batchelor's degree and continued to study art and earned a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. After being certified by the State of Georgia, Barbara taught art in the public school system for 36 years, many of those at Sallie Zetterower School. She has studied under famous artists such as Elizabeth Robins, James Salensky, Janet Walsh, Roxie Remley and Katie Garner. She enjoyed painting watercolor, oils, acrylic, pastels and colored pencils. When asked which medium is her favorite, Barbara would reply, "Which ever one I am working on now!"

She was an avid member of the Averitt Center for the Arts where she loved participating in events.

She was a lifelong member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church where she was a member of the Cora Williams Circle.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Roy L. Akins, Sr. "Bucky".

Surviving are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Kaykay Akins of St. Simons Island & Statesboro, Elder Tom and Gina Akins of Wrightsville, and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lois Akins-Newsome and Jack Newsome of Washington, GA; her seven grandchildren, Tyler (Allison) Akins of St. Simons, GA, Harrison Akins of Statesboro, GA, Graham Newsome and Kohen Newsome of Washington, GA, Hannah Akins and Jesse Kate Akins of Wrightsville, GA, Brady McVay of St. Simons, GA and one great granddaughter, Oakley Akins of St. Simons, GA.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00pm until 7:00 pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 28, 2013, at 11:00am at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Randy Waters officiating, assisted by Elder Bill Durrence. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cora Williams Circle.

The family requests that memorial contribution be made to the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, 4 South Zetterower Ave., Statesboro, GA 30458, the Oaky Grove Primitive Baptist Church, 54 Oaky Grove Church Road, Wrightsville, GA 31096 or the Averitt Center for the Arts, 33 East Main St., Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
