Lady Lansdowne died on 18 February 1965, from injuries sustained in "a shotgun blast in the gunroom at her Scottish home, Meikleour House Barbara Chase was the daughter of Harold Stuart Chase and Gertrude Boyer. She married George John Charles Mercer Nairne Petty-FitzMaurice, 8th Marquess of Lansdowne, son of Major Lord Charles George Francis Mercer Nairne Petty-FitzMaurice and Lady Violet Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, on 18 March 1938. She died on 17 February 1965. From 18 March 1938, her married name became Mercer Nairne. As a result of her marriage, Barbara Chase was styled as Marchioness of Lansdowne on 20 August 1944. From 1947, her married name became Mercer Nairne Petty-FitzMaurice.

The 46-year-old Marchioness, the former Barbara Chase of Santa Barbara, Calif., was injured by a shotgun blast in the gunroom at her Scottish home, Meikleour House, on Friday, but the shooting was not made public until Monday and details have not been disclosed. The police called it an accident. She was taken to the Perth Royal Infirmary with abdominal and chest wounds and immediately underwent surgery. Her condition worsened last night and relatives were called during the morning. An hour after they arrived she died. Her husband, the eighth Marquess of Lansdowne, and her father, Harold Chase, the industrialist, were at her bedside. Mr. Chase had flown here from the United States to be with his daughter. The Marchioness once managed her own ranch in the United States. It was there that she got acquainted with guns. She was an excellent shot and won the British Women’s clay pigeon championship in 1952. The 52-year-old Lord Lansdowne, Britain’s former Minister of State for Colonial Affairs, is the son of the late Lady Astor of Hever by her first marriage, to Lord Charles Mercer Nairne, who was killed in action in World War I. The Lansdownes were married in 1938 and had lived in Britain since then. Both were friends of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Besides Lady Caroline, who died from gunshot wounds in 1956 at the age of 17, they had two sons, the Earl of Shelburne and Lord Robert Mercer Nairne Petty-Fitzmaurice and one daughter, Lady Georgina. Lord Lansdowne succeeded his cousin to the title in 1944.

The bride, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stuart Chase of Hope Ranch Park, was given in marriage by her father in the ceremony performed by the Rev. John De Forest Pettus, rector of the church. After the ceremony there was a reception at Las Terrasas, the country estate of the bride’s parents. Among the witnesses were Major the Hon. John Jacob Astor, step-father of the bridegroom, and the bridegroom’s mother. Mrs. William Randol Jr. was matron of honor and other attendants were Mrs. John Bradley Greene of Dayton, Ohio, the bride’s sister; Mrs. Edward Jewett of Detroit and Mrs. Standish Backus Jr. of Santa Barbara, her cousins; Miss Ariel Bryce and Miss Jacqueline Hamilton of New York and Miss Willametta Kech of Pasadena. The bridegroom’s best man was his cousin, the Hon. Michael Astor. Ushers were Frederick Stearns 2d, John Bradley Green, Standish Backus Jr., Richard Magee, Richard Collins and William Urmstrom. After a wedding trip, the couple will return to Santa Barbara for a brief visit, pass a few weeks in New York and then sail to the Scottish home, which Mr. Mercer Narine inherited from his great-grandmother, Baroness Narine and Keith. Miss Chase, whose father is a well-known real estate man here, is a graduate of the Santa Barbara School for Girls and a provisional member of the Santa Barbara Junior League. An accomplished horsewoman who has shown her horses in the Santa Barbara Horse Show, Miss Chase, like her fiancé, is a polo enthusiast and has played with the woman’s team of the Santa Barbara County Polo Association. Miss Chase’s fiancé is the son of Lady Violet Mary Astor, wife of Major the Hon. John Jacob Astor. His father, Major Lord Charles George Francis Mercer Nairne, was killed in action in the World War. On the maternal side Mr. Mercer Nairne is a grandson of the Countess of Minto, who makes her home in London, and of the late Earl of Minto. Through his father, the bridegroom-elect is a grandson of the fifth Marquess of Lansdowne, and a nephew of the sixth and cousin of the present Marquess. The prospective bridegroom’s father took the surname Mercer Nairne from his grandmother, wife of the fourth Marquess, who was Baroness Nairne in her own right. Mr. Mercer Nairne, who is now visiting the family of his fiancée here, was graduated from Eton and Oxford and played on the polo team of the latter institution. He came here with the Crosswick four in December, 1935. It is expected that the marriage will take place at the Chase home here in March
