Notes:
She was born on Wednesday, July 15, 1807, in Lincolnton, North Carolina, USA, LONG W 81.242811, LAT N 35.474160.
"On page 91, we stated that Barbara Cancellor [Cansler] was born on July 15, 1807. This is at variance with the record on her tombstone, which very clearly reads 1811. This is not a matter of great moment, but we wish to state our reasons for believing that the stonecutter made an error or that the incorrect year was given to him by some member of the family:
Item: In the census of 1850, Barbara Nichols gave her age as 42, in the census of 1860 as 54, and in the census of 1870 as 63. Allowing for an apparent error of one year [depending on whether the census was taken before or after her birthday], all three censuses show that she was born between 1806 and 1808. The median date of 1807, and the one given by her in 1870, must be the correct one.
Item: Her oldest child was born in January of 1824. If the date on her stone (1811) was correct, she would have been married at the age of 12, a possible, but remote circumstance.
Item: Mr. Hoffman, in his book, OUR KIN, states that the youngest of the six daughters of Conrad Cansler, Ula [i. e. Julia] married James Long. The census of 1850 (Union County, GA) shows that Julia Long was born in 1809. On the basis of this evidence, we believe that a date before 1808 is the only reasonable conclusion."
