About Barent Joosten Ridder

Barent Joosten was born in the mid-1600's in Europe and died about Nov 4, 1711 in Flatbush, Long Island, New York.

He married Styje Laurens on Dec 7, 1658 in the New York Reformed Dutch Church on Long Island.

Barent Joosten came to America in 1652. In the New York Reformed Dutch Church marriage book, he was listed as Barent Joosten, Van Witmont in Ebderlt (of Witmont in Emberland) and his wife Styje Laurens, Van't lange Eylant in N. Nederlt (of Long Island in New Netherland). "Ridder" often preceeded Barent's name, meaning "horseman."

They settled in Bushwick, Long Island in 1661, where he was a magistrate in 1663 and 1664. In 1664, he was appointed to represent the town of Boswyck to a "convention of the Dutch towns on Long Island, called by the magistrates of Amersfoort, Breuckelen, Midwout, and Utrecht to discuss sending to Holland a suitable messenger to lay before the Hon. Lords Bewinthebbers, and the High and Mighty States General what has happened to the towns on Long Island through the acts of the English and the barbarians." Jan Strycker, the subject of another chapter, signed the document.

On Aug 24, 1675, Barent Joosten's name appeared on an "assessment roll of the real and personal property of the inhabitants of New Uytrecht." He was taxed 114.10 pounds for one adult, 4 horses, 16 cows, and 3 hogs.

On either Apr 6 or Dec 10, 1675, he and Jan Hansen Van Nordstrant bought 100 morgens of land from Francois de Bruynne in New Utrecht and Gravesend. They later sold the land to Albert Coerten Van Voorhees for 38,750 gl. wampum value, or about $15,340 - a large sum in those days.

On Sep 28, 1683, Baerent Joosten's name appeared on the rate list of New Utrecht, taxed for one adult, 40 acres of land, 5 horses, and 17 cows. His name also appeared on the assessment rolls of New Utrecht in 1693.

In 1683, 1686, and 1687, he was a constable in Brooklyn. He was listed on Dongan's patent in 1686.

In Sep, 1687, he took the Oath of Allegiance in Kings County described as "barent Joosten Ridder of New Utrecht, 35 years in America."

In 1698, his name appeared on the census of Kings County, which listed all the freeholders, their wives, children, apprentices, and slaves within Kings County on Nassauw Island. In the town of New Vtrecht, after his name appeared numbers indicating one man, one woman, one child, and one slave.

The Deacons' Book of the Flatbush Church established the date of his death throught the entry "6 guilder was paid Nov-ember 4, 1711 for the use of the shroud for Barent Joosten."
