About Barlow Hale Call

The following newspaper article is regarding the death of Barlow Hale Call's son, Dean, and it also mentions the death of Barlow himself:

Dean Call Dies of Injuries Following Airplane Crash - Tragedy struck for the second time in less than five months in an Afton family when Barlow Dean Call, 24, well known local pilot of Star Valley Aeromotive, Afton, died Sunday afternoon, February 2 in the Memorial Hospital at Evanston from complications resulting when the airplane he was flying while hunting coyotes with a government trapper crashed in the desert 2-1/2 miles east of Carter, Wyoming.

Thursday afternoon January 30, Dean's father Barlow H. Call, was killed and his brother, Glen L. Call, was seriously injured in a mid-air collision near Rock Springs on September 16, 1968, while hunting coyotes from airplanes under government contract.

Injured in the crash last Thursday was Eugene Slagowski, a government trapper, of Evanston, who suffered back and foot injuries and facial lacerations, and is receiving treatment at a Salt Lake City hospital.

Mr. Call, who based his coyote hunting operations in Rock Springs, where he lived with his wife during the week while hunting, and returned to Afton when not hunting, and his companion, Slagowski, were reported missing Thursday night when they did not return to their base. Their plane apparently nosed into the ground out of control. It is believed Mr. Call was enroute to Evanston to leave Slagowski before returning to Rock Springs when the crash occurred. He had left his airplane radio equipment at Evanston for repairs.

George R. Hanrahan, watch supervisor for the Federal Aviation Administration Rock Springs Airport, said he was notified by the highway patrol that the plane was overdue at Evanston. He alerted all search and rescue units and law enforcement officers in the area Thursday about 8 p.m.

Among those responding to the search call were the Unita County Sheriff's Posse, the Kemmerer and Star Valley Search and Rescue Units and the Wyoming Civil Air Patrol. About 30 snowmobiles were rounded up in Star Valley and transported to the area early Friday morning to comb the area. Some searched during the night.

The plane was sighted Friday just after noon 2-1/2 miles east of Carter, between Kemmerer and Lyman, by Col. John Johnson, commander of the Wyoming Civil Air Patrol and State Aeronautics Director Marvin Stevens. They reported seeing one man alive near the plane, waving his arms. They directed mobile units on the ground in to the scene of the crash by radio, using the highway patrol frequency.

When rescuers arrived, including some of the searchers from Star Valley, they found Dean alive, with a fractured right leg, back injuries, and suffering from severe frostbite form the all-night ordeal in subzero temperatures on the desert. Slagowski was found a mile or more from the plane; he had tried to walk for help. He suffered from back injuries and an injured foot, along with face lacerations and frostbite.

The two men were taken to Memorial Hospital in Evanston for treatment and Slagowski was later transferred to a Salt Lake City hospital. Mr. Call died Sunday afternoon from complications of his injuries, and the body was brought to Afton for funeral services and burial.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 6 at 1 p.m. in the Afton Second-Third Ward Chapel, with Counselor Paul J. Sttevig conducting. Burial will be in the Afton Cemetery.

Barlow Dean Call was born April 29, 1944, at Pocatello, Idaho, to Barlow Hale and Aldene Larsen Call. The family moved to Afton, where Dean attended school, graduating from the Star Valley High school in 1962. He was also a seminary graduate.

He attended college at the University of Wyoming in 1962-63 and Ricks College at Rexburg, Idaho, in 1965 and 1966. He fulfilled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Northwestern States Mission in 1965. He was active in the auxiliaries of the church, and held the office of an elder in the Melchizedek Priesthood.

He married Ruth Ellen Fournier June 29, 1966, in the Logan LDS Temple. Ruth is the daughter of James Melvin and Grace Cox Fournier of Helena, Montana.

Dean was a member of the Wyoming National Guard unit at Afton and was taking officers candidate training. He completed his six months of active duty basic training at Fort Ord, California, the fore part of 1967.

He is survived by his wife; his mother, brothers Glen L. and Stanford L. and sisters, Janell and Kaylene; grandparents, Mrs. Louie A. Call and Melvin G. and Hedvig E. Larsen, Bancroft, Idaho.
