OLSON, BARNEY J.

Barney J. was born in Stavanger, Norway in 1845. His parents brought him to the United States when he was eight. They settled in Illinois. In 1861 he enlisted in the Civil War under Captain Cogswell. After the war he came to the prairie, and on the death of the Captain, he was sent the flag under which his company fought; of this he was justly proud. He married Miss Carrie Halvorson and they started moving west. They came to the prairie from the Palouse Country. With them came five sons and a daughter. Oscar and Isaac were old enough to homestead in their own right. The other sons were Carl, John and Will. Isaac and Carl married sisters, Irna and Maude Jackso of Ilo and farmed in the area between Nezperce and Craigmont for many years. Maude still owns the land that she and Carl bought. One of Isaac’s sons, Claude, lives in Clarkston, and Isaac’s granddaughter, Jeannie Zolber, had children and grandchildren in the area. Oscar Olson moved first to Greer, then in 1905 went with other prairie residents to Twin Falls and the irrigation project. Will did not stay permanently on the prairie either. John Olson set up a plumbing ship in Nezperce and at the time the water system was put in made the connections and put in the plumbing in a great many residences in the town of Nezperce. When this flurry of activity was over he move to Pullman, Washington and set up a plumbing shop there. Page 181
