He was the judge who passed the death sentence on Derek Bentley despite a recommendation from the jury for mercy. Years later Bentley was posthumously pardoned, partly owing to the work of forensic linguists from the University of Birmingham. It was found that Bentley's supposedly dictated statement was neither dictated, nor in his own words.
