• 'Ida de Grey (1368- 1 June 1426), also known as Edith de Grey was a Cambro-Norman noblewoman, and the daughter of Reginald Grey, 2nd Baron Grey de Ruthyn, a powerful Welsh Marcher lord. The Greys of Ruthyn were the chief Marcher barons in the northern region of the Welsh Marches.
• 'Ida married Sir John Cockayne, Chief Baron of the Exchequer by whom she had six children. Through her eldest daughter Elizabeth, she was an ancestress of Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, and Catherine Howard, queens consort of King Henry VIII of England.
• Family
• 'Ida was born at Ruthin Castle in Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales in 1368, the youngest daughter of Reginald Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Ruthyn and Eleanor Le Strange of Blackmere (1337- 20 April 1396). She had four siblings including Reginald Grey, 3rd Baron Grey de Ruthyn, the implacable enemy of Owen Glendower. It was her brother's land dispute with Glendower which caused the latter to launch his rebellion against King Henry IV of England and take Reginald prisoner, keeping him in confinement until he was ransomed by the king for the sum of 10,000 marks.
• 'Her paternal grandparents were Sir Roger Grey, 1st Baron Grey de Ruthyn and Elizabeth de Hastings. Her maternal grandparents were John Le Strange, 2nd Baron Strange of Blackmere, and Ankaret Le Botiller, daughter of Sir William Le Botiller and Ela de Herdeburgh. Ankaret was a direct descendant of Welsh Prince Gruffydd II ap Madog, Lord of Dinas Bran and his wife, Emma de Audley.
• Marriage and children
• 'In 1387 at Bearwardcote, Derbyshire, Ida married Sir John Cockayne, Chief Baron of the Exchequer, the son of Sir John Cockayne and Cecilia de Vernon. In 1417, Sir John bought 1500 acres of land in Bedfordshire which included the village of Hatley Bury. He renamed the village Cockayne Hatley and established his manor there. Henceforth, the manor of Cockayne Hatley in Bedfordshire became the principal residence of the Cockayne family.
• 'Together Sir John and Ida had six children:
  • * Sir Reginald Cockayne (1390- after 10 February 1428), married Beatrice Walleys, by whom he had issue.
  • * Henry Cockayne (1392- ater 10 February 1428)
  • * Elizabeth Cockayne (1394- after 1422), married firstly in 1411, Sir Philip Butler by whom she had two sons; she married secondly on 13 December 1421, Sir Laurence Cheney of Fen Ditton, Sheriff of Cambridge, by whom she had five children, including Elizabeth Cheney, the great-grandmother of Queens consort Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, and Catherine Howard.

• 'Ida's husband Sir John died in 1427 and was succeeded by their eldest son Sir Reginald. Ida died on 1 June 1426 and was buried in St. John's Church, Cockayne Hatley. There are many fine effigies of the Cockayne family which can be seen in the church at Cockayne Hatley.

• SIR PHILIP BOTELER, KT. of Watton Woodhall succeeded his cousin Sir Edward in 1413 in the estates entailed in 1312 by their common ancestors Ralph Boteler and Hawise Gobion.(3) He died 6th Nov. 1421,(32) and his widow Elizabeth married secondly Laurence Cheney Esq. of Fen Ditton, by whom she was the ancestor of the Dukes of Norfolk, the Peytons of Iselham, and other noble families.(33) She was the daughter of 'John Cokayne, who puchased from Sir Edward Boteler the manor of Bury Hatley in Beds, and was one of the executors of John of Gaunt, who calls him in his will 'chief steward of my lands.'(34) He was raised on the accession of Henry IV. to the office of Chief Baron of the Exchequer, which he held during the whole of this reign; but he was also a Judge of Common Pleas from 1406 until his death in 1429.(35) He was the second son of John Cokayne of Ashbourne in Derbyshire by Cecilia Irton his wife, and is confused by Foss with his nephew of the same name who died in 1438. (35) He married Ida, daughter of Reginald Lord Grey of Ruthyn by Eleanor le Strange, who died in 1424, leaving four sons and two daughters.(29) Their surviving children were:
  • 1. REGINALD, son and heir, ancestor of the Cokaynes of Cokayne Hatley.
  • 2. HENRY occurs with his wife Grace in his father's Will.
  • 3. JOHN. 4. THOMAS, a priest, who was presented to the rectory of Pulverbatch by his brother-in-law Philip Boteler on 19th July 1413.(36)

• John Cokayne died in 1429, and desired by his Will to be buried at Bury Hatley, but his monument stands in Ashbourne Church, and is accurately figured by Dugdale as a specimen of the judicial robes worn at that period.(37)

• To be buried in the parish church of Bury Hattele. To my nephew John Cokayn of Ashbourne Kt., to his wife, and to his daughter Alice, wife of Ralph Sherley Kt., one gold ring each.
• I desire that 3 marks a year be paid by my son Reginald Cokayn and his heirs to pray for the souls' health of Henry vj., of myself, of the said Reginald and Beatrix his wife, and of all my sons living, also for the souls of John late Duke of Lancaster, Richard ij., Henry iv. and Henry v., of John Cokayn by father, and Cecilia Irton* my mother, of Edmond Cokayn my brother, 'Ida my late wife', and my dead children. To Sir William Babington Kt. a book of statutes and L10 from the heritage of the heirs of Sir Philip Boteler Kt. To Reginald Cokayn, my son and heir apparent, all my armoury and my ornaments in my chapel at Bury Hatley. To Henry Cokayn, my 2'd son, and Grace his wife two silver cups; to John Cokayn my 3'd son one cup; and to Thomas Cokayn my 4th son my missal, psalter, and all books of canon and civil law. To Laurence Cheyne and Elizabeth his wife my daughter a cup. To Margaret D'odyngsells my daughter a cup, and I forgive her husband Sir Edmond D'Odyngsells Kt. his bond debt to me.
