"Grouard´s third wife was Eulalie Garnier, the sister of Baptiste Garnier who was known on the frontier as Little Bat. Nicknamed LaLie, she had been married to John Hunton, a roadhouse operator on the Chugwater in Wyoming. She had left him about 1886 and had married Grouard; but this marriage failed, too, and she eventually settled on Pine Ridge with somene else."
Hardorff gives as source John Hunton´s Diary, Vol. III (Lingle, 1960), pp. 47-8
Speaking of Eulalie Garnier, I remember having read about her marrying the (in)famous Frank Grouard (will check the source of this info). Has anybody additional facts about the Grouard/Garnier connection?
Hello,
Both men were scouting for Crook in 76’.
Bat served as an army scout for Merritt in 1872, Crook in 1876, and at various time thereafter, ”barely escaping” in the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1891, he having been interpreter in negotiations seeking to forestall the fight and having been caught unarmed in the melee.
THE DEATH OF BAPTISTE GARNIER
The Chief of Fort Robinson Scouts, Baptiste "Little Bat" Garnier was shot by James Haguewood, bartender, in this building known as Dietrich's Saloon, December 16, 1900. "Little Bat" died near the center of the street intersection about 3 a.m. and was buried at the Fort Robinson cemetery. The record of death and interment states: "Deceased was brutally shot while wholly unarmed and without cause or justification." On a plea of "self-defense," Haguewood was acquitted. Garnier served his country well in bringing peace to the frontier. from: http://www.nebraskahistory.org/publish/m....ste_garnier.htm
