The Legend of Prince Oldřich and Božena
Legend has it that in bygone days, sometime at the very beginning of the 2nd millennium, near the small town of Peruc, not far from the River Ohře in the vicinity of Louny, Prince Oldřich was hunting for deer in the local dark, deep forests. Near a well, he spotted a glamorous girl washing linen ("perúc prádlo" - hence the name of the small town, at least according to a version provided by the chronicler Václav Hájek from Libočany). The arrow of love hit the prince's heart. Oldřich, however, was a married man and Božena was most probably married as well (the chronicler has it that "she was Křesina's"). At that time, however, as the famous chronicler Kosmas maintains, it was a shame if one threw in one's lot with one woman for good. Never tired of seeing "a young woman with a complexion whiter and shinier than ivory", Oldřich took Božena away and married her. Their deep, mutual love brought great benefits to the country as the Achilles of Bohemia, the future Prince Břetislav I, was born out of this union. Thanks to Božena, the famous Přemyslid ruling dynasty was spared the shame of dying out in the male line.
