Bendt Nielsen was born in Flakkevaduhus, Rungsted, Frederiksborg, Denmark. He and his family traveled across the United States by wagon company in 1854 to settle in Utah. During the nine-month trip, his wife, Margrethe, died when the family reached Saint Louis. There Margrethe was buried.
Bendt and his children reached Utah a few months later, arriving in Salt Lake City. There Bendt married his second wife, Kirsten, with whom he would have five children.
Bendt's children settled throughout Northern Utah, particularly in Box Elder and Cache counties. While most of them are buried in Hyrum City Cemetery, two are buried in Denmark, one in Sanpete County, Utah, and some in Weber County.
Although the names of his two wives appear on his gravestone, they are buried in different locations. Margrethe is interred in Saint Louis (cemetery not yet found), and Kirsten in Hyrum City Cemetery, Hyrum, Utah.
