About Benito Juan
Benito was a Papago man
Biography:
His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
Research Notes:
-many sources have the name listed backward, this person was named (given name) Benito (surname) Juan (NOT Juan Benito) Not to be confused with a Venito Juan, Papago of Pima and Maricopa Counties, AZ during the same time frame. Juan seems to have been a common Papago name in AZ during the 1900-1940 time period, many census reports refer only to Juan and cannot be verified as being for Benito Juan. Many military muster reports refer only to a Juan, Juan I, or Juan II without a given name so cannot be tied to Benito Juan either.
-estimated birth date of 1893 is based on a statement by Carla Joinson that he was 33 at death in 1926
-admitted April 23, 1923, with no diagnosis, from the Sells Agency, Sells, Arizona
-buried in the Canton Asylum cemetery row 2 plot 58
-age 32 in 1925 South Dakota State census which also identifies him as Bonito
