History of Benjamin Allen (1745 - 1826) · 5 October 2014 · by Garry Bryant

Benjamin Allen Farmer, Soldier (1745 - 1826)

The first child of the marriage between Robert Allen, Sr. and Marth Sarah (Cathey) Givens, was born about 1745 near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. Combining the children from the first marriages of his father and mother, he had 16 half brothers and sisters.

During his childhood years was the French & Indian War (1756 - 1763). Frederick County was on the American frontier during this time. Threat of Indian attack was great. A surveyor, George Washington, was in the county to survey the land for building of forts to protect the settlers.
The Allen Genealogy has him married twice, but inspection of the dates of children makes this suspect. Both marriages were to women whose Christian names were Margaret.
Margaret Wohoab (Wohoad, Walkup) Green married to Benjamin as his second wife in 1778. (However there is a statement that her maiden surname may be Henderson. Alluding to her having been married to ??? Wohoad or ??? Green.) This is confusing! Margaret (Green) Allen was born in 1749 and died in 1831.
Benjamin Allen served in the Revolutionary War. Afterwards he moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, continuing his occupation as a farmer. He died about 23 January 1826, in Casey County, Kentucky.
Benjamin and Margaret (???) Allen had four children. CHILDREN
 1. John Allen - Born 1774.
 2. Margaret Allen - Born 1787.
 3. Samuel Allen - Born 1787.
 4. Elizabeth Allen - Born 1795.
Benjamin and Margaret (Green) Allen had ten children. CHILDREN
 5. Robert Allen - Born about 1772. Married to
Nancy Christerson 22 October 1798, in Casey
County, Kentucky. He died about 1828 in
      Casey County, Kentucky.
 6. John Allen - Born 1774. Married 1st to Esther
???, three children; 2nd to Eleanor Lynch on
17 February 1790, in Lincoln County, Ken-
tucky. Died about 1840 in Winchester, Scott
      County, Illinois.
 7. Sarah (Sally) Wohoab Allen - Born 1776 in
Virginia. Married 27 June 1798, to Job Swee-
ney at Bond, Lincoln County, Kentucky, three
children. Died before 1825 in Casey County,
      Kentucky.
 8. James Green Allen - Born 7 October 1779, at
Botetourt County, Virginia. Married 14 August
1812, to Frances Flowers “Fannie” Jones in
      Casey County, Kentucky, twelve children.
Died 1 July 1864, Casey County, Kentucky.
 9. Thomas Allen - Born 16 June 1781, in Freder-
ick County, Virginia. Married 10 November
      1803, to Sarah Sally Christerson. (1785 -
1870?, daughter of Robert and Mary (James)
      Christerson, of Baltimore, Maryland. Perhaps
a sister to Nancy) in Lincoln County, Ken
tucky. Died 23 December 1859, at Kirksville,
Adair County, Missouri. She died before 1870
in Adair County, Missouri. Nine children. 10. Martha Allen - Born 1783. Married to Joseph
Slatton (Slatten or Leatten) on 10 June 1799,
at Bond, Lincoln County, Kentucky. 11. William D. Allen - Born about 1785. Married
to Mary Livingston, four children. 12. Margaret (Peggy) Allen (twin) - Born about
1787. Married to Scott Jones. 13. Samuel Allen (twin) - Born 1787 in Lincoln
County, Kentucky. Married to Margaret ???,
perhaps six children. Died after 1860 in Wayne
      County, Kentucky/Illinois ? 14. Elizabeth (Betsy) Allen - Born 1799 in Lincoln
County, Kentucky. Married 1st to Thompson
      Scott; 2nd to ??? Jones.
As one can see this list of children does not add up to be correct. First off the fifth child’s birth date is listed as being about 1772, making him the first born child! And the fourth child is actually the thirteenth child. It would appear that the two wives are probably just one, and she gave birth to 14 children.
