"Yearb" Barton, older brother of Buck Barton, was my Grandfather. Their parents were Benjamin F. Barton and his second wife Melissa Gacy. Benjamin was born in Alabama about 1832-33. Melissa in Alabama about 1849. During the 1860's Benjamin was in the Monroe area of Ouachita Parish. He married Harriet Heaton January 2, 1856. They had 3 children - Thomas W., Marsha I., and Earley M. Harriet died Jan. 29, 1867. During the Civil War, Benjamin was a Private in 3rd Battery, LA Light Artillery. He appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War Paroled atMonroe Jun. 9,1865. He married Melissa Gacy Jan. 6, 1868. At the time of the 1870 Census the family was in Alexandria, Rapides Parish. By 1880 they were in Grant Parish. The Census listed Benjamin, age 47, Melissa 31, Early 14, Louisa 11, Yearby 8, H.E.(female)6, Amanda 5, Wm. R. 2, Baily 1. Thomas, oldest son,21, lived nearby. Sister Martha Barton Tullos 19, a widow, and her 1 year old son lived with Thomas. Benjamin homesteaded 119 acres of land in Bentley. He died before the term of the homestead was completed. Feb. 29, 1892, his widow, Melissa D. Barton received the deed to the property. Several of the children remained in Grant County. Buck and Yearb returned to Rapides. B.F. Barton, Thomas, Marsha, Early, Baily, and several grandchildren are buried in Frazier Cemetery, Bentley. In Dec. 1900, in a double wedding in Alexandria, Yearb and Buck married sisters Alice Ophelia and Anna Cordelia Kemp. Although Census records listed them as twins, the sisters were triplets. The third girl died soon after birth. They were among 12 children of Elijah Kemp and Lacy Ann Alford, which also included twin boys - Ivey and Iley. Buck and Cordellia apparently remained in Rapides Parish. They had at least 6 children - Eula Irena, Levy Cordia, Hugy F., Colwell, Edith, and Merril. Buck registered for the World War I draft Sep 12, 1918. His registration card showed he was age 41, born Jan 4, 1877, residence Sycamore, Rapides Parish, medium height, stout build, gray eyes, black hair. In lieu of signing the card, he made his mark ...X. Buck, Cordelia, and their first born, Eula(1901-1925), are buried in New Hope Cemetery, near Hineston. In the 1930 Census, son Hughy Barton, age 24, was a boarder in the home of Townley and Eunice Medwin. Hughy's uncle, Ivy Kemp - one of the twin brothers of Cordelia and Ophelia - lived in the next residence. Are you a descendent of Uncle Buck (as my mother called him, although she never met him)?
