Tradition says that Ben Stout was killed by an Indian. There are no details as to when or where, but Ben's will is found onrecord under the date of September 17, 1788, in Book 31, Page 145, of NewJersey wills.

Benjamin Stout was the first to come to Western Virginia in the year 1754 when he laid a claim on Simpson's Creek. He was combing the area as a hunter and trapper. He returned to New Jersey, married twice and after the second marriage came back to Western Virginia in 1772 with his new wife and four oldest children
