About Benjamin Brooks
BIOGRAPHY: Soldier from Springfield in the French and Indian War.
Benjamin Brooks was a soldier in the 1721-1725 Drummer's War, also known as Greylock's War and Father Rasle's War.
In 1604 Samuel Champlain had explored the Kennebec River and claimed the surrounding territory for the French. The French however, had not settled the land. Over time, the English began claiming the land by homesteading. Meanwhile, the Abenaki peoples claimed the same land as their ancestral homeland. In an effort to reclaim their lands the Abenaki, lead by Chief Graylock (1670-1750), began conducting raids against the English along the Connecticut River and from coastal Maine to Lake Champlain. They allied with the French as the lesser of two evils, the French supplying them with weapons hoping to retain a buffer between Massachusetts Bay Colony and Quebec.
Father Rasle was a Jesuit Missionary who lived with the Abenaki along the Kennebec believing that the native peoples could be converted to Christianity, a source of irritation for the English who generally regarded the Native peoples as savages. They also believed that Father Rasle had a more direct involvement in the raids against the English settlements. Father Rasle was killed by the English in 1724.
Ultimately the Abenaki were reduced to about 150 people and retreated into Canada. Chief Greylock remained defiant until his death and refused to sign any treaty with the English
