About Benjamin Cobb

A Patriot of the American Revolution for MASSACHUSETTS with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A023424

Benjamin and Mary, his wife, joined the First Church in Falmouth, in 1766. They lived first on Falmouth Neck and then in that part of Falmouth which is now Westbrook, ME. Jan. 23, 1767, he purchased of Joseph Thomas, laborer, a lot of land containing four square rods, situated on the southwesterly side of Fiddle Street. Mrs. Abigail Thomes, daughter-in-law of Joseph Thomes, lived on the adjoining lot (Cumb. Deeds, Vol. V, P. 50). June 13, 1774, Benjamin Cobb bought of Peter Woodbury, of Cape Elizabeth, cordwainer, 102 acres lying in Falmouth (now Westbrook), on the north side of the Presumpscot River adjoining Windham, (and in the neighborhood of the Duck Pond), 50 acres of which Benjamin Cobb, yeoman, sold to Joseph Cobb of Falmouth, yeoman, July 9, 1777 (Cumb. Deeds, Vol. XI, pp. 22-23). Aug. 7, 1792, Robert Huston, of Falmouth, yeoman, sold by deed to Benjamin Cobb, of Falmouth, yeoman, a "parcel of land containing near forty eight rods, adjoining Benjamin Cobb's land, and includes the same land whereon the said Benjamin Cobb's house now stands" (Cumb. Deeds, Vol. XIX, p. 278. Benjamin Cobb afterwards added to his farm two other adjoining lots of land, one of which he purchased of Zaccheus Lambert, Mar. 7, 1796 (Cumb. Deeds, Vol. XXIV, p. 112). The other lot he purchased of Thomas Conant, Aug. 25, 1804 (Cumb. Deeds, Vol. XLIV, p. 148). His house and other buildings, which stood on a cross road about half a mile from the Duck Pond, with his farm , which comprised sixty five acres more or less, he devised by will to his son Richard. Benjamin Cobb in a few years after his removal from Falmouth Neck, became a member and deacon of the Free-Will Baptist Denomination, but finally became a Methodist. The Eastern Argus of April 1, 1817, adds to its announcement of his death:"Thirty of his last years he lived an exemplary Christian".
