Notes for Benjamin William Dorris:

There have not been very many records found on Benjamin, nor has there been any good evidence that Benjamin was the son of William. Circumstantial evidence points to the probable connection between William and Benjamin. Benjamin Dorris was in Cameron Parish in Louden County Virginia by 1772 living next to his brother Joseph and their parents. In 1785 Benjamin again followed his parents and brothers John and William, this time to North Carolina. His parents and brothers settled in Orange County, Benjamin settled in a neighboring county in either Caswell or Rockingham County.

Benjamin was probably born between 1750 and 1755 in Hunterdon Co., New

Jersey. It is believed that he married Ann Cockrill about 1773 in Louden County Virginia. She was born about 1750 in Virginia and was the daughter of Joseph Cockrill, a prominent land owner. Joseph was born about 1725 in Virginia and he married Jane . Ann Cockrill Dorris died about January 1793. After her death it is believed that Benjamin may have married a woman by the name of Sally. Benjamin died shortly after this marriage in 1795 while cradling oats.

Notes for Ann Cockrill:

There is no evidence that Ann married Benjamin Dorris. She is mentioned in her fathers will as Ann Doriss. So we know that she married a Dorris, but not sure of her husbands first name. Circumstanial evidence show that she may have been the wife of Benjamin Dorris. All other Dorris during this time period have been accounted for with their wives, none named Ann.
