Residence Berryville VA; an 18 year-old Farmer. Enlisted on 3/8/1862 at Berryville, VA., he was mustered into Company K, 6th Virginia Cavalry as a Private. Wounded In Action 8/22/1862 at Catlett's Station, VA.; returned to duty 2/16/1863. POW 6/7/1863 Miller's Factory, VA.; Paroled 6/25/1863 Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. POW 3/20/1864 Loudoun County, VA.; held hostage for Dahlgren's men; Oath Allegiance 6/20/1865 Fort Delaware, DE.

Postwar, he was a farmer, Stock Dealer and Postmaster of Berryville, VA. Married Sarah Jane Rust in 1869.

BENJAMIN F. FOLEY. Benjamin Franklin Foley, late postmaster at Berryville, Va., was born September 12, 1843, and died June 16, 1915. He had attended the Confederate Reunion in Richmond, was taken sick, and died in St. Luke's Hospital. Benjamin Foley joined the Confederate service at Centerville, Va., in March, 1862, serving with Company K, 6th Virginia Cavalry, and took part in the battles of Front Royal, Winchester, Brandy Station, Port Republic, Cross Keys, Second Manassas, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Mountain. He was taken prisoner twice, and the first time he was exchanged after three weeks in prison. On the second capture he spent nine months in prison, having been held in the Capitol Prison, at Washington, D. C., as a hostage for Dahlgren's men. He lost one brother, James Oswald Foley, at Kelly Island, W. Va., the third man killed in the war. After the War he lived in Berryville, VA. Confederate Veteran, 1915, p. 469.
