Captain in Revolutionary War

Benjamin Higginbotham, Sr. was one of the seven children of a Higginbotham couple who resided in the community of New Glasgow in Amherst Co., formerly Albemarle Co., Virginia, the other six children being Moses, Joseph, Aaron, John, James and Rachael. He married on 21 Feb 1751 in Amherst Co. to Elizabeth Graves, daughter of Francis Graves, Jr. and sister of the Clara Graves who married his brother Aaron Higginbotham. Thereafter they were joined in Georgia by all of their children and their families, the children being Caleb and wife Mary Ann, Anne and husband Jacob Higginbotham (her first cousin, son of Joseph), William and wife Dolly Sandidge, Benjamin, Jr. and wife Mary Gatewood, Francis and wife Dolly Gatewood (sister of Mary), and Joseph and wife Frances Higginbotham (his first cousin and daughter of Moses). The Amherst Co. Order and Deed books contain many references to Benjamin Higginbotham. Three of his sons served as officers in the Revolutionary War from Amherst Co. He made his Will on 9 Feb 1790 in Wilkes Co. and it was recorded in Elbert Co. on 25 Jul 1791, naming all of his children and appointing his wife Elizabeth and sons William, Benjamin, Joseph and Francis as executrix/executors.
