1780's-97 Districe SC (Revolutionary War Service)

Our Benjamin JONES, of 96 District in Northern South Carolina, served as a private and lieutenant in North & South Carolina under Capt George Taylor, also under Col Anderson and briefly under Capt. John Turner. Fought at the Battles of King's Mountain and Cowpens. The SC Rev War audited Account #4197 below refers to our Benjamin JONES who later settled in Georgia and eventually Franklin Co, TN by 1812. (See widow Susannah's Pension Files for more details. (Her pension application of 1852 was rejected for some reason.)

Audited Account #4197 Roll 80, pages 193-205 for Rev. War Service (SC State Archives) 24 June 1785-(SC Treasury Certificate/No 415 Book T)

"South Carolina. Pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly passed the 16th March 1783, We, the commissioners of the Treasury, have this day delivered to Mr. Benjamin JONES, this indented certificate, for the Sum of six pounds, fifteen shillings & eight pence half penny sterling for Militia Duty as private as per account audited. The said Benjamin JONES, his Executors, Administrators, or Assigns, will be entitled to receive from this Office the sum of nine shillings & five pence on the ??, for one year's interest on the principal sum of six pounds, fifteen shillings & eight pence, half penny and the like interest annually. The said Benjamin JONES, his Executors, Administrator or Assigns, may make any purchase at any public sales of confiscated property, (except such as shall be ordered by the Legislature for special purposes and theis INDENT shall be received in payment. For the true performance of the several payment in manner above-mentioned, the PUBLIC Treasurery is made liable, and Faith of the State pledged by the aforesaid ACT.

Given under our hands at the Treasury Office in Charleston, the twenty-fourth day of June, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-five.

1785- SC Treasury Receipt/No. 800 Book Y "31 Dec "85 - Benjamin Jones for one month duty as private in Capt Turner's Company Militia in 1780. Two pounds two shillings and ten pence farthing sterling."

We, Peter Boqueat & John Mitchell Treasures of the State of South Carolina, Please to deliver my Indent to the bearer herof th John Turner & I do hereby authorize and empower the said John Turner to act and do for me & in my name and in so doing this power shall ba a receipt against the same from your ??

(Note: Our Benjamin Jones & Susannah, along with sons Britton, Allen & others, had settled in Franklin Co, TN by 1812. Benjamin and Susannah moved to Georgia from So. Carolina, but it is not certain if they settled there during the 1780s or after 1790, since there were men named Benjamin JONES who were in the same area of SC and Georgia during this time) Further research on the other sons Allen & Francis, etc may lead to the answer.

"State of So. Carolina, To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting. KNOW YE, That in persuance of an Act of the General Assembly of said State passed the twenty-eight day of March in the Uear of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-four, for the purpose of securing and granting Land within this State to the Officers and Soldiers as therin set forth, We have granted and by these Presents do grant unto BENJAMIN JONES (a soldier) his Heirs and Assigns, a Plantation or Tract of Land containing Two Hundred Acres situate in the District of Ninety Six, on Chesota Creek of Toagoto River---To have and to hold the said Tract of Two Hundred Acres of land, and all the singular other the Premisses hereby granted unto the Benjamin Jones his Heirs and assigns for ever---, Given under the Great Seal of the State

WITNESS his Excellency William Moultrie, Esquire, Governor and Commander in Chief in and over the said State, at Charleston this second day of May Anno Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eight Five and in the Ninth Year of the Independence of the United States of Ameriac".

(Note:This creek heads SE of Gaffney, SC in the present day county of Cherokee, about 10 miles from NC line. It flows SE into Thicketty Creek which flows east into Broad River.)
