At the age of 37, Benjamin enlisted as a private on 1 Sep 1864 in Company H, 174th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He died of disease on 20 Jan 1865 at Murfreesboro, TN. He was originally buried at the Stones River National Battlefield Cemetery at Murfreesboro, TN. His remains were apparently later removed and re-buried at Sunbury.
