About Benjamin League

My 3G Grandfather, James League of Amelia County, VA, married Mary Ann Marchbanks about 1754, based on the birthdate of their first child Benjamin born 21 Feb. 1755. They would eventually have 15 children the last of whom was Joel, my 2G Grandfather.

Benjamin, a Revoutionary War soldier, married Ann Hubbard, (b.9 Jan. 1768 - d.29 July 1809), daughter of John Hubbard and Keziah Pigg Hubbard, just short of her 15th birthday. They received a marriage license 17 Dec. 1782 in Amelia County, VA [W&M Quart., Vol. 16, p.82 see also "Marriages of Amelia County, Virginia, 1735-1815", p. 67, compiled by Kathleen Booth Williams; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.,Baltimore, 1979].

From the information I have been able to gather, they had one, possibly two sons.John League was mentioned in his grandfather's will being given land his father, Benjamin, had developed for his father-in-law, John Hubbard. It is possible that the John H. League, Private, Capt. Decker C. William's Company of Riflemen, 6th Regiment, Virginia Militia, found in the military records of the War of 1812 was in fact the son of Benjamin and Ann.If that is so, then it is probable that the initial "H", stood for "Hubbard" but I have no proof of this. In "One Thousand Years of Hubbard History, published by Harlan Page Hubbard, 1905, p. 99" Polly's surname is spelled "Butterton". A marriage bond found in the Pittsylvania County, VA Court House dated 6 June 1808 to John League and Polly Butterton, daughter of William Butterton [other sources spell the name Betterton], Sr. with William Butterton, Jr. as Bondsman. A Rev. Griffith Dickinson married them.

John is mentioned, in the supplement to the 1810 census of VA, Pittsylvania County, along with Hosea League as white tithables.A Hosea H. League is found in the Stewart County, TN census in 1820. A Hosea League was 36 when he applied for land in Texas in 1826. Various references about Hosea H. League are to be found in "The New Texas Handbook". Therefore, my presumption is that John and Hosea were sons of Benjamin and Ann.
