The courtship of Benjamin, Jr. & Lydia Roberts was apparently aided a bit by his father, who wrote the following letter to Lydia's father, Owen Roberts on 20 Aug 1716: "Beloved Friends, Owen Roberts and Mary, his wife, Our Love is unto you and to your son and daughter. Now this is to let you understand that our son, Benjamin, has made us acquainted that he has a kindness for your daughter, Lydia, and desired our consent thereon and, we having well considered of it and knowing nothing in our minds against his proceeding therein, have given our consent that he may proceed orderly, that is to have your consent and not proceed without it. And it is our desire that you give your consent. Also, now, as concerning his place that we have given him to settle on, we shall say but little at present. Ellis Lewis knows, as well, of our minds and can give you as full account of it as we can if we were with you, but if you will come down we shall be very glad to see you or either of you, and then you might satisfy yourselves. Now we desire you, when satisfied, to return to us an answer in the same way as we have given you our minds. No more, but our kind love to you and shall remain your friends. Benjamin and Ann Mendenhall" (signed).
On 4 Dec 1716, Benjamin Jr. sent this note to Lydia Roberts: "Dear and loving friend, Lydia Roberts, Now under the consideration of our long being absent and in respect of my kind and true respects of love unto thee my dear and loving friend having an opportunity I am willing to visit thee my dear friend with these few lines which as a small token of my kind love and true respects unto thee my dear love. And I intend, if the Lord permit, to come up on the sixteenth of this instant and pay thee a visit of love my dear friend. Also, furthermore, I say let thee understand that I am in good health and all the rest of us through mercy at present. Hoping these may find thee and the rest of you in as good health as we are. So now I shall draw to a conclusion in the same love that I have sent these few lines in. Benjamin Mendenhall" (signed).
Benjamin & Lydia (Roberts) Mendenhall were married March 9, 1717.
Benjamen was recommended as a Friends minister June 2, 1725. He went to preach in North Carolina with Samuel Hopgood where he died. His will is probated in Chester County, Penn.Oct. 1, 1743.
