Biography
"Benjamin Westcott, b-Old Warwich, July 4, 1684, d-Cranston (now part of the city of Providence), early in 1766, m-Bethiah Gardiner of Narragansett (new South Kingston), R.I., b-1687, d-Feb. 2, 1760.... Benjamin was made freeman 1720. on Feb. 12, 1732, William Greene, surveyor, laid off for Benjamin, fifty-eight acres of the then allotted lands of Meshantituck, he holding 'shares' or 'rights' entitling him to this allotment. It is probable that he occupied this land some time before... It (Benjamin's land) is in the southerly part of Cranston, hear what in old times was called 'Sarle's Corners.' It is now known as Oak Lawn...Issue, 8 ch.: Benjamin, Stukely, Bethiah, Dorcas, Hannah, Phebe, Josiah, Samuel." [1]
Note
Though there are several sources that indicate that Benjamin Westcott's wife's name was Bethia Gardner or Gardiner, I have not been able to place her in a family yet. The Gardner and Gardiner family histories that I have found are silent on her, including "The Gardiners of Narragansett"[2], which shows several other Westcott connections.
