Bennett Hook Pilcher

08/1840 arrived Port Nicholson, New Zealand; Ship Coromandel from London 10/12/1839. Stephen Pilcher, future husband, on same ship with Susan, 17, Stephen, 11 and John, 8 (from his first marriage to Ann McPharlane who died on 19 Dec 1834). 2 children remained in the UK - George and Ann.

Bennett had 3 children (actual fathers unknown except one was Edward Mathews) while in the UK - Rachel born 1826, Emily born 1832 and Friend born 1829 and she married Stephen on 13 August 1842. They had 7 children together.

Immigrant to NZ aged 29

When Bennett sailed on the COROMANDEL she was a widow, travelling with her children Rachael aged 12, Emily aged 8 and Friend aged 5. They embarked from St. Katherines Docks, London at 4 oclock on Monsay 9th December 1839 and left London on the following day.

They arrived in Port Nicholson (now Wellington) on Friday 29th August 1840... A journey of nearly 9 months.

Also on board was Stephen Pilcher aged 44 who was travelling as a widower with his 3 children.

A daughter, Sarah, was born to Bennett and Stephen 2 months after they arrived in New Zealand (therefore conceived on board 2 months after setting sail). They married 2 years later and had another 6 (known) children.

This was a known total of children for Bennett of 10 and 12 for Stephen.

Bennett died 6 months before Stephen.
