About Bernhard Hubley, Sr.
When Bernard was 13, he and his younger brother, Michael (age 10) and their father, Joseph Hubley, sailed to America from Rotterdam, arriving in Philadelphia on October 17, 1732. They sailed on the "Pink John & William." Soon after arriving, their father died and the boys were sent to live with a family friend in Lancaster, PA. In 1740, an uncle, also named Michael, came from Germany to take care of them. Bernard became indentured to a Valentine Krug who was in the tanning business. As he grew into an adult, Bernard became active in political life. He was a member of the Lancaster Board of Burgesses from 1750-1757 and again from 1766-1767. He later served as county treasurer and finally as county commissioner. Although a comparatively old man when the struggle for independence began (57), he put his faith and fortune in the cause of the colonies. By this time, Bernard was a wealthy man. As the war began, he wrote, "Private monies for the cause; do not let the right hand know what the left hand doeth; Love thy Neighbor. I am giving my means, and ma willing to give my life, for my beloved country and the liberty of my brethren." With several of his sons serving in the army of the colonists, he felt that he too should serve. On Dec. 18, 1777, he was appointed Barrack Master of Lancaster County wit rank and pay of a captain. He presided over the captured Hessian troops who were imprisoned in Lancaster. Bernard Hubley (1719-1803), DAR Ancestor A059561
