research Descendants of Nils Pederson Hauknes Generation No. 4

16. Bernt4 (Nils3 Johnsen, John Nilson2 Hauknes, Nils Pederson1) was born 05 Jul 1858 in Malselv Norway, and died 20 May 1941 in Wishkah Valley Wa.. He married Olina Olson 1883, daughter of Ole Olson and Marit Strombu. She was born 07 Sep 1862 in Malselv Norway, and died 14 May 1932 in Wishkah Valley , Wa.
Notes for Bernt: Bernt Foshaug and his Wife Olina (Olsen) came from Malselv to America, "The promised land" Brookings, South Dakota in 1884, and then moved to Porterville, Wisconsin. In approx 1887 they moved to Port Blakely, Washington; and later lived a short time on B Street in Aberdeen before settling in the Wishkah Valley near the coastal town of Aberdeen, Washington in approximately 1903. They had twin boys at their Wishkah home on February 13th 1908, bringing their total to eleven children in that house. In the early days on the hill northwest of the confluence of the East branch of the Wishkah river and the Main branch, they would provide food and lodging to loggers. The Wishkah homestead was across the road from the Hays Dairy ranch on the sharp bend just below the "Wynooche cutoff road". Across the road from the house, adjoining the Hayes ranch, they had a barn with 7 or 8 stalls for milk cows. Down the hill toward the river they had a small pasture for growing feed hay for the cows. Following Bernts death, his daughter Nora lived for some time with her family. Later the house was abandoned and fell into shambles and was overgrown by the apple orchard surrounding the house. Around 1990 the sharp bend in the Wishkah road was straightened out and now runs across the back of the property.

The loggers would pay Swen Johnson ride in his boat to a dock at his ranch. ( which was at the uppermost point which boats could reach). They would then walk the short 1/2 mile to Bernt and Olinas boarding house, where they could buy meals and a night or two of lodging. From there they would go on up to Camp #6 which around 1905 was located approximately 5 miles east on the Wynooche Cutoff road and north on the Donovan-Corkery road (grade). Bernt primarily worked at sawmills and did some logging.
When Bernt died his family could not afford a cemetery plot, so the county paid Fern hill cemetery $2.50 for a complete burial, including coffin, plot, and service. He is buried in the northwestern part of the cemetery in an area known as Potters field (Block 101 Grave 46, 7th addition) in an unmarked grave.

Apparently Olina added an E to the middle of her name when she was young prior to marrying Bernt Foshaug. Most of the information in the family book provided by Arnold Hegg refers to her as Olina Oleson. She had 12 children (one died in infancy). She is buried in Fern Hill cemetery ( S. E. block 130, Grave 1 third addition. Following the funeral of my uncle Curt in January 2001, I contacted the cemetery manager who showed me where she is buried. He told me that at the time she passed away there was a standard headstone used, but hers wasn't to be found. He dug down about 4 inches under the mossy grass, and found her head stone - we then re-set it on top of the grave.

MARIT STROMBU (Mother of Olina)

Marit Strombu was born in Strombu, Osterladen, Norway January 8, 1833. She married Ole Olson in Foldalen, Norway in 1854. They resided in Norway until 1888 when they migrated to the United States and settled in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Ole died in 1895 and six years later Marit and several of her children moved to Aberdeen, Washington. She lived with her bachelor son, Martin. (Information concerning Ole Olson was not available)
Marit Strombu Olson had a brother Jurgen (George), a brother Peter, and a sister Oline, who all migrated to the United States about 1888. Apparently there were other other children, but information was not available. George Strombu's name was changed to Oleson and Olines married name was Christensen. Ruth Oleson, daughter of George Oleson (Strombu) visited Norway in the late 1960's and a quote from a letter from her, "When I was in Strombu I visited the old Strombu Gard (Farm) where my father and Marit Olson were born. That home is still there and must be over 200 years old. Their new home was built about 1960 and is a comfortable 10 room home. They said it took seven years to build, as it was constructed by men in the family and was part stone and part wood. The wood was from trees cut down on their own farm and left to dry thoroughly before being used". Marit Oleson had eleven children: Kari, Ole, Eldri, Olina, George , Martin, Sam, Peter, Ingrid, Hannah, and Mary. They were all born in Norway and all but the oldest settled in the United States. They first settled in Wisconsin, but about 1900 several moved to Washington state (Ole, Olina, George, Martin, Peter, Ingrid, and Hannah) Ole changed his name to Ole Oien. Keenly interested in the affairs of her family, friends, and Church, Marit Olson had remarkably sound sight, hearing, and memory during her 101 years. She kept house for her son Martin until about two years before her death in 1934. She had a fall when she was in her eighties, and suffered a broken hip. She was unable to walk after that, but got around well on a chair with castors. Grandma Olson, as she was known by relatives and friends, saw many remarkable changes in life style. While a child in Norway, she helped to spin yarn and weave cloth. She saw changes in lighting from candles to kerosene lamps to electric lights. She enjoyed automobile rides and loved flowers. Her bible was her constant companion. At the time of her death, six of her children were living: George Olson, Martin Olson, Peter Olson, Mrs. Chris (Ingrid)Peterson, Mrs. Peter (Hannah) Hegg, and Mrs Clarence (Mary) Sprague.

Notes for Meier Foshaug:

When Meier was 85 years old he wrote down his life memories. In those notes he tells of his great sorrow when his sister Marit left for America when he was 4 years old. (He had hopes as he grew up to go to the Promised Land). His older brother Bernt went to America when he was older. Bernt bought and sent tickets for Meier to come to America, and he was scheduled to leave on April 7th 1887. However in March of that year he received a letter from Bernt saying that no one was allowed to come to America because of cholera. The tickets were returned and refunded due to the epidemic. Meier was elected to the Norwegian Parliament and was active there in 1905 when Norway declared its independence and separation from Sweden. In 1955 he was one of two surviving members of the original parliament and was scheduled to speak in Oslo before the parliament on May 17th, the fiftieth anniversary of Norway's independence. However, on the 16th, he passed away while in Oslo. When Ragna was very small, the family would visit him and his brother. She remembers him giving her candy to make her happy. In 1932 he painted a picture of his home, Solbakken, with Mt Istandin in the background. (this painting is now owned by Oyvind)
