My aunt Bertha (Breindel) was born in NY, the oldest child of seven. She was always bright, industrious, and devoted to her family. She married Sammy Kasten z"l, and moved to Spring Valley, where she helped run the family hotel. I remember my family stopping in on the way to or from the Catskills, and my sister Ruchel and I each getting a doll from her.
The family moved with the Sheinberg Yeshiva in the early sixties to Yerushalayim, Mattasdorf, where they live til now. My aunt Bertha was always surrounded by her two daughters, their children and grandchildren.in addition to all the neighbors who came for sheurim in her house, some advice or tzedaka. My cousin Naftali had four children living here as well, until two sons and families returned to Monsey.
Her clarity of mind, abundant drive to help others and wonderful smile remain sharply etched in my mind. Aunt Bertha walked with giants, and was one herself in scholarship, Torah knowledge and depth of religious belief. May she be a meilitz yosher for her family and all clal Yisrael, Rifka Hirshowitz
